Garden en Vogue – Katya Roelse

Waterproof cotton duck canvas, Nylon ripstop, organza, Ottertex canvas, Sinamay bias ribbon, felt, White Pine boughs, Cedar Port Orford c151, Fraser fir boughs, plastic chicken wire, black cable ties

The daring of the Winged Victory of Samothrace and the exuberance of fashion, with a nod to Ann Lowe, combine in this a celebration of yuletide cheer. Festooned in fabric flowers and elements from the Winterthur Garden, this stunning gown is a reflection of the indoor and outdoor beauty of the season.

This work was crafted by Katya Roelse, who is an instructor in the University of Delaware’s Fashion & Apparel Studies program and is the Director of the Design and Creative Making Certificate Program. Roelse also recreated a near-exact replica of Jacqueline Kennedy’s wedding gown with the assistance of a team of undergraduates. The dress is on view in Ann Lowe: American Couturier, and its stitch-by-stitch creation is chronicled—along with color photos as well as the story of Lowe and many of her dresses—in Winterthur’s latest book, Ann Lowe: American Courier, available in the Museum Store.
