Nest Neuron series

Nest Neuron series, Deirdre Murphy, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; 2021, Monoprint and acrylic paint on paper

The Nest Neuron series was inspired by the diversity of songbirds and their nesting habits on the grounds of Winterthur. Murphy explains, “Nests often blow to the ground after a storm. I would find the nests and then run them through the printing press creating one-of-a-kind monoprints and embossings.”

Some of these prints have drawn and painted birds. Others were created using stencils. Murphy created one bird stencil based on her sketches of John James Audubon’s Yellow Throated Warbler, an object she studied at Winterthur.
