Community
The Upcycled! bench installed outside the Winterthur Galleries symbolizes community: many hands came together and contributed to its creation. The mosaic facets echo the many different people who contributed to this project, leaving traces of the artists’ hands. The collaboration between Winterthur and The Creative Vision Factory introduced Winterthur to others in the greater Wilmington community and identified ways that Winterthur can partner with and help its neighbors.
The artist, Stefania Urist, draws upon the universality of the experience of being born in reference to Mother Nature in The Ceiling. The work is also aspirational in its call to action: calling for marginalized groups to come together and work towards pushing through the glass ceiling. Another one of Urist’s works, Bonded Memories, also speaks to a collective experience. Bonded Memories references the community of the natural world, with Urist symbolically depicting the ways in which we are connected to leaves, trees, grass, etc.
